Tour Overview
Mount M’Goun (4,068m) is the third highest peak of the Atlas after Toubkal and Ouenkrim. This six day M’Goun trek is fully guided, starting in Ait Bougmez Valley, your first introduction to these Berber homelands, much quieter than those around Toubkal. The hiking terrain is still sublime, with a mix of wide green valleys pierced with irrigation canals and fruit trees. After some acclimatisation walks and camping, the trek to Mount M’Goun takes place over two days, heading first to Aghouri Pass and Tarkedit Plateau (2,900m). Camp on the southside at 3,400m before summiting the great M’Goun itself.
Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1 : Marrakech
Location: Marrakesh
Accommodation: Gîte Dar Chez Ali or similar in Agouti
Meals Included: Dinner, tea and coffee
You are transferred either from Marrakech airport or the city itself. If time allows, do take time to explore this fascinating city, home to numerous mosques, palaces and gardens. A private transfer then takes you to your gîte, a traditional Berber building in Agouti, a village in Ait Bougmez Valley, north of M’Goun.
Day 2 : Agouti - Arousse
Location: Agouti, Arousse
Accommodation: Camp
Accommodation Name: Tents
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, tea and coffee
After breakfast, meet with our expert mountain guide and muleteer to start your walk through traditional Berber villages that dot Ait Bougmez Valley up to Arousse. The vegetation consists mainly of walnut, apple and fig trees, contrasting against the rugged Atlas terrain of towering rock formations. Establish an overnight camp in Arousse and spend the evening under a blanket of stars.
Walking for the day: 3-4h
Day 3 : Arousse - Tarkedit Plateau - Mount M’Goun
Location: Arousse, Tarkdit, M'Goun
Accommodation: Camp
Accommodation Name: Tents
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, tea and coffee
Begin the trek to the foot of M’Goun, passing shelter caves on a loose cliff face and emerge on to Aghouri Pass. Descend to the wind-eroded and sometimes snow-covered high plateau of Tarkedit (2,900m). After lunch in a hut on the plateau, climb to the southern side, making camp at 3,400m, directly below Mount M’Goun and ready for the attempt on the summit the following day.
Walking for the day: 7-8h
Day 4 : Mount M’Goun - Azib Izabine
Location: M'Goun, Azib Salah
Accommodation: Camp
Accommodation Name: Tents
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, tea and coffee
Make the ascent to the summit of Mount M’Goun. The climb follows a long ridge, at around 4,000m which, depending on conditions, takes between four and five hours to summit. From the top, there are panoramic views across Draa Valley and out towards the Sahara Desert to the south. Descend towards Oulilimtback and on to Azib Izabine and camp for the night.
Walking for the day: 8-9h
Day 5 : Azib Izabine - Ain Aflafal - Tighermet N Ait Ahmed
Location: Ain Aflafal عين أفلافال, Ait Ahmed
Accommodation: Camp
Accommodation Name: Tents
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, tea and coffee
Begin the descent towards Ain Aflafal. The trail leads through stunning landscapes, with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. Continue down the valley and pass through small Berber villages as far as Tighermet n Ait Ahmed, where camp is set up for the night.
Walking for the day: 5-6h
Day 6 : Tighermet N Ait Ahmed - Tizi N’Ait Imi - Marrakech
Location: Cash Plus Ait Melloul Al massira, Tizi n' Aït Imi, Marrakesh
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
Start early in the morning and climb to Tizi n’ait Imi, which stands at 2,960m. The climb is challenging, but the panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes will be well worth it. What is the fitness level required to do this tour?
This tour is rated moderate to strenuous and is suitable for anyone in excellent physical condition with the longest day offering 8-9h of walking. No mountaineering or climbing experience is required. The climb to M’Goun summit is non-technical but very demanding. The terrain varies and the trails are often exposed to the sun. In the mountains, the route follows ancient Berber tracks, which can be high, steep, narrow, uneven and rough underfoot. Some parts of the walk are above the snow line. We will provide crampons if needed, which might be the case if doing the trip in the winter months. Due to the lack of signposted trails, you will be supported by a local qualified mountain guide, this is a very remote area.
