"A lot of places in rural Japan are spread out, which is not a worry when on a tour but otherwise a car is advised. Most big tourist attractions can be reached by train and/or bus, but a tour or car is the best way to make the most of your time there!"

Northern Lights

tarvel guru branding

What locations would you recommend for viewing the northern lights?

"Iceland is good for its wide open sky spaces, as well as Svalbard. Being in far north latitudes, the nights are longer and the light pollution is much less (you can see it within town!)."

What's the best time of year to see the northern lights?

"Spring and autumn. The weather is more stable (clouds are your biggest foe!) and there is generally more solar activity during the equinoxes."

What are your top tips for photographing the northern lights?

"A tripod or something sturdy to prop your camera is a must. It also helps to have a subject in the foreground, which shows the true scale of the aurora."

What do you love most about Northern lights?

"Photos do not do justice to seeing the northern lights. The scale and beauty of it has to be seen to be fully appreciated!"

@ulrika.wanderwoman's Top Tips

"Remember that it’s never 100% guaranteed to see the northern lights, as it’s a natural phenomenon and the sky must be dark and clear. Fortunately, there are plenty of other things to do in Lapland."

Must pack items for Lapland
