Location: Arenal Volcano
Accommodation: Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast
On this horseback ride to the La Fortuna Waterfall and Replica Indigenous Village, you will see the spectacular Arenal Volcano and dormant Cerro Chato Volcano off in the distance with gorgeous green countryside all around. The horses are sturdy and friendly bred for tourism and are well adapted to the wet, jungle environment of Costa Rica.
This is a slow and easy ride up to the waterfall, so it is perfect for first-time riders, families, or people who really want to soak in the surrounding natural beauty. Throughout your 1-hour La Fortuna horseback ride through rainforest trails, your guide will point out wildlife, and you will get to see beautiful views of the green countryside and the breathtaking Arenal volcano.
When you reach the entrance to the waterfall, you will "park" your horse at a rustic ranch and head with your guide down to the La Fortuna Waterfall.
There are over 300 steps to get to the base of the La Fortuna Waterfall along a private trail. The last part of the hike down you will have to go over a few slippery rocks, but the trek is worth it! When you reach the bottom, you'll have an opportunity to take lots of pictures and swim in the cool waters of one of the largest waterfalls in Arenal.
PLEASE NOTE: The walk down to the La Fortuna waterfall is not recommended for older people with hip, ankle or knee problems as the path is rather rocky and slippery. The Dos Pinos waterfall can be viewed from the upper platform where visitor dismount their horses without having to do the hike down to the waterfall on the difficult path.
When you're ready, take your time as you head back up the trail and staircase to where your horses will be waiting to take you back to the ranch. This is an excellent, well-rounded horseback ride in La Fortuna.
On your way back, you’ll stop by a little thatched-roof cabin to learn about the Maleku, one of Costa Rica’s few remaining indigenous tribes that originates in the Arenal area. Admittedly it feels pretty touristic to make a stop at the Maleku site, but it's for a good cause. The Maleku economy relies on tourism and the sale of their original handmade artwork. The Maleku inhabited the La Fortuna Waterfall area and their populations peaked over 300-hundred years ago to several thousand members, but now fewer than 600 tribal members exist.
You will get to learn a little bit more about the Maleku culture and see the Maleku traditional handicrafts. You may even pick up a few words in Maleku like "kapi kapi!"
You might want to bring a little extra money to buy some authentic Costa Rican souvenirs! What a perfect way to see the beautiful nature and culture of Costa Rica!
Overnight in Arenal
Day 11 : Transfer Arenal – Monteverde Lake Crossing
Location: Monte Verde
Accommodation: Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast
This half-tour transfer service is the fastest and most scenic way to go or come from La Fortuna (Arenal Volcano Area) to the Monteverde area.
Around 7:30 a.m. we start picking everybody from the hotels in La Fortuna for a 30 minutes minibus drive to the Arenal Lake Dam where you will board a very comfortable and safe pontoon boat for a 30 to 40 minute ride to RÃo Chiquito, a little town at the other side of the lake.
Arenal Lake is the largest and the most important lake in Costa Rica, it was man made in 1974 to provide hydroelectric energy for the country. It is also a place where you can find different kinds of resident and migratory birds. Sometimes mammals can be seen in the surroundings, also great views of the Arenal Volcano when it’s clear.
Once at RÃo Chiquito, you’ll leave the boat for a short break to stretch your legs, then continue your journey for another 1,5 hours to get to your hotel in the Monteverde area, sometimes during the rainy season this transfer can take a little longer.
Afternoon at leisure.
Overnight in Monteverde
Day 12 : Don Juan Coffee & Chocolate Tour
Location: Monte Verde
Accommodation: Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast
This tour begins with an introduction to the history of coffee in Costa Rica, including its cultural and socio-economic importance. You’ll then examine the life cycle of a coffee plant – from seed to plant to fruit.
Afterwards you’ll learn how coffee cherries are picked and also talk about the workers who immigrate here during harvest season. When coffee cherries are ready to be picked (from November till February), tour participants are invited to pick a few cherries.
You’ll then learn how pulp was traditionally removed from the coffee cherry, and discover how the cherry is washed and separated. At the drying patio, you’ll see how Costa Rica’s hot and dry climate allows the coffee beans to be spread out on a large patio and dried naturally in the sun.
At the warehouse the coffee beans are stored in big fiber sacks that allow the beans to breathe and complete their aging process. This is also where the selection of coffee beans, the roasting, and the packaging of Don Juan coffee is done.
You will then be given the option of riding in a typical ox cart—this is a fun way to experience how Costa Ricans used to travel. At the end of the tour you’ll be invited to try a deliciously fresh cup of coffee at the La Casona restaurant.
This tour also includes a visit to the chocolate processing center. Here you will participate in the chocolate-making process and have the opportunity to learn how small cocoa beans are converted into chocolate. You'll learn about traditional methods used to roast and grind the beans, and try a range of tasty chocolates.
Finally, you will learn about sugar cane in Costa Rica. Your guide will help you extract sugar cane in a traditional fashion, and you'll get to enjoy a glass of pure sugar cane juice. A sweet ending to a sweet tour!
