Tour Overview

The Southern Languedoc Roussillon region offers a taste of all the best that France has to offer – from a Roman arena, medieval hill towns and citadels, superb, rustic cuisine and wine, through to cutting edge modern design.  Travelling by Eurostar and TGV to the heart of the delightful and lively southern university city of Montpellier, our tour includes a sample of all the variety that this archetypally French region has to offer. Highlights of the trip, which has been running for close to two decades, include the perfectly-restored medieval citadel town of Carcassonne, Narbonne, Pezenas, Sete, the walled town of Aigues-Mortes, the Camargue and Sir Norman Foster’s stunning Millau Viaduct.

Highlights

  • Cathar history – the citadel of Carcassonne is breath-taking

  • Characterful seaside towns

  • Modern architecture – the Millau Viaduct is a wonder

  • Lively cities – the university city of Montpellier exudes southern charm

Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris and onwards to Montpellier Sud-de-France by TGV. On arrival, transfer by coach to the hotel. Welcome drink at the hotel.

Day 2:Morning In Montpellier With Afternoon Visits To Pézenas And Sète.

Location: Montpellier

Capital of the Languedoc region, Montpellier is a dynamic, lively city, renowned for its cultural life and many students which matriculate at its 13th century university. Pézenas is a charming little market town, full of lovely old mansions and quaint courtyards – perfect for an afternoon stroll. Sète is France’s largest fishing port and a lively seaside resort. With a strong cultural identity of its own, which includes a fine cuisine, eating in a restaurant along the royal canal is a must.

Day 3:  Full Day Tour To Carcassonne And Narbonne.

Location: Carcassonne

The Cité de Carcassonne is a dramatic sight, a walled fortress crowned with fairy tale turrets perched above the River Aude. The walled city, some parts of which date back to the 5th century was extensively restored in 1853. A major city during Roman times Narbonne’s delightful, restored, medieval centre is the where you’ll find the majority of its sites. These include the impressive 13th century Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur and the Archbishop’s Palace.

Day 4:  Full Day To Relax And Explore Montpellier At Your Leisure.

Location: Montpellier

Our hotel is located just off the main square, Place de la Comédie, which leads into the atmospheric historic centre. This area is filled with lovely squares, grand 17th and 18th century mansions and plenty of restaurants. You are also just a short walk from Montpellier’s cathedral, the Sun King’s triumphal arch and the Promenade Peyrou. A visit to the Musée Fabre, said to be the best gallery in southern France is a must.

Day 5:  Full Day Tour To Saint-Guilhem-Le-Désert And The Millau Viaduct.

Location: Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert

Sitting pretty in a ravine off the Hérault River, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is a breath-taking village of old honey-coloured, tiled houses gathered around the 12th-century Abbaye de Gelone. Hailed as an engineering masterpiece of the 21st century, the Lord Norman Fosterdesigned Millau Viaduct stretches 1.5 miles over the Tarn River valley, a ‘sculpture in the landscape’.

Day 6:  Full Day Tour To Nîmes, Aigues-Mortes And The Camargue.

Location: Nîmes

Nîmes is home to some of Europe’s most extensive Roman ruins, including a 1st century Roman arena. The wonderfully preserved walled city of Aigues-Mortes (Place of Dead Waters) is approached across the salt marshes of the Petit Camargue. It was from here, before the city became marooned three miles from the sea, that Louis IX twice departed for the Crusades. An area of outstanding natural beauty, the Camargue is a nature-lover’s paradise, famed for its flamingos and white horses.

The number of people on or tour was 19. The drop down menu seemed to stop at 10. The hotel and weather were superb. I was disappointed in Carcassonne, but that is not something Travel Editions could have remedied; it's in the nature of the place. Narbonne and Nimes were wonderful. I would like to visit them both again.. The cathedral in Narbonne was a sight to behold, vast and majestic. Alex, our tour guide was very knowledgeable. He was a little on the underplayed side, but that was much better than if he had been overbearing. I would be more than happy to go on a tour led by him again.

All we could have hoped for, with a good combination of free time and well-planned tours: even the one wet day did not spoil the excellent drive through the Camargue. Angela Minton was a first-class tour manager - the right mixture of efficiency, care and expert knowledge (though this is something we have come to expect from Travel Editions!)

The only down side we had was that, once again, we were unable to travel with the rest of the group on the trains. We hope to travel with you next year and will also hope to be with other members of the group on the journey to our destination. Our tour manager was great, full of information and witty comments. The hotel was lovely, clean and helpful staff.
